New pitches boost for Barrhead in new council budget
14 FebruaryNew sports pitches are amongst the major projects planned for Barrhead after East Renfrewshire Council agreed its budget for 2012/13 this week.
In addition to spending on local services amounting to over £225m in the next year, councillors have announced extra one-off investments of nearly £3m in roads, sports and schools.
The council is backing new 3G pitches and changing facilities at Cowan Park in Barrhead with investment of £278,000, and available for use by pupils at Barrhead High. New sports pitches will also be created at St Luke's High costing £600,000.
Barrhead High School's long disused swimming pool is to get a new lease of life, with £145,000 will be spent on the pool area to rescue it from disrepair and convert it into a drama and dance space for use by the school.
The council's roads budget will be boosted in 2012/13 by £1.75m, with an extra 30% invested in road maintenance. Extra spending will also focus on sports and will include partnership with local football clubs coupled with investment in school sports facilities.
